FALL Newsletter 2023

President’s Letter

Dear Neighbors,

I trust the pleasant summer-like weather is being enjoyed by everyone despite the recent deluge. The rain, which flooded so many area properties and roads, highlights the drainage issues confronting our neighborhood, especially the former golf course property. The property has historically served as a drainage corridor and consistently experiences ponding and standing water after a severe storm. However, the recent rainfall saw unprecedented water levels.

Obviously, this is a major issue in the review of the proposed development, not just on the site but the effects on the neighborhood and downstream areas. We have urged the Planning Board to consider implementation of zoning measures to mitigate future drainage problems such as reduction of the standard width of new streets and elimination of sidewalks. In light of these conditions, the Planning Board should undertake enhanced analysis of the feasibility of building lots in areas that have historically flooded after significant rainfall.

The applicant is in the midst of preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) after receiving instructions by the Planning Board regarding additional items to be included in the document. We are pleased to say that the Planning Board included many of our recommendations for inclusion in the DEIS.

When the DEIS is submitted to the Planning Board, residents will have an opportunity to voice their comments in Public Hearings or by e-mail or regular mail. Given the additional information required of the applicant it could take some time. The Board will inform you when we have a definitive schedule announced by the Planning Board.

Regards,

John E. Sheehan
President

Hail & Farewell

Edward (Ted) Munday Armstrong

We regret to report of the recent death of Ted Armstrong, a long-time resident of Gedney Farms. Ted lived on Oxford Road with his wife Connie where they raised their four children. Ted was a senior executive at IBM for many years.  He enjoyed the beauty and peaceful nature of our neighborhood and was a strong supporter in protecting its unique character.

A true “Renaissance Man” Ted was an accomplished pianist and had broad interests in many cultural and sports activities. Ted’s very distinguished life was celebrated recently at Westchester Hills Golf Club by his many friends and family.

Beautification in Gedney Farms

We extend our gratitude to our members for their support in maintaining the enchanting garden located at the intersection of Richbell Road and Fairway Drive. This Native Plant garden, part of the WPBF Adopt-A-Park program, was planted in 2022 with the generous sponsorship of the Gedney Association and the collaboration of DPW and local nurseries.
