PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Neighbors,
As we enter the Fall season, I am pleased to inform you that the City has responded to our concerns about cut-through traffic on Heatherbloom Road by prohibiting vehicles entering Burke by making a right hand turn from Heatherbloom Road during the morning rush hour period. Our narrow streets are not designed for such traffic and we will remain vigilant in restricting cut-through vehicles.
We will soon observe the ninth anniversary of FASNY’s purchase of the former Ridgeway Country Club. Also, it has been almost seven months since FASNY’s announcement that it was placing approximately 48 acres of its property on the market. In the meantime, the property continues to suffer from lax maintenance. After complaints from us and other neighbors, the City has notified FASNY to take remedial action.
We have been told by at least one developer that FASNY is considering selling the entire property. The Board has decided to submit a letter to the Common Council indicating that any alternative development of the property should strictly adhere to the underlying zoning which permits single-family, detached homes on 30,000 square foot lots.
Lastly, the Annual Meeting will be held on November 20th at Westchester Hills Golf Club at 7:30 PM. Our Committee has arranged for an informative night including the following City officials as our guest speakers:
Richard Hope, Commissioner of Public Works
Christopher Gomez, Planning Commissioner
Thomas Soyk, Parking & Traffic Deputy Commissioner
Joseph Castelli, Police Chief
We look forward to seeing you.
Very Truly Yours,
John E. Sheehan, President
HEATHERBLOOM ROAD: NEW TRAFFIC REGULATION
There is a new traffic regulation at the entrance of Burke and Heatherbloom Rd. westbound. Since January, members of the Gedney Association have held meetings with the Transportation Commission Chair, Tom Soyk, and subsequently with Mayor Roach, to discuss the increase in traffic volume and speeding on Heatherbloom Rd. On September 10th, a “No Right Turn: 7 to 9:30AM” sign was installed after the Common Council voted 6 to 1 to install the sign temporarily for a six month testing period.
This new sign is consistent with the “No Left Turn” sign exiting Burke, and is the result of numerous studies conducted by the City depicting an alarmingly high number of vehicles using Heatherbloom Rd. to enter Burke’s campus, especially during morning rush hours. This new regulation will dramatically reduce cut-through traffic on Heatherbloom Rd., which is a big victory for residents in Gedney Farms. The Gedney Association will continue to fight to reduce traffic volume and speeding within our neighborhood.
BEAUTIFICATION: GEDNEY ESP & GEDNEY PARK DR
The greens of Gedney Farms continue to get much needed attention, as reported in our Spring Newsletter. On Gedney Esplanade, the Department of Public Works (DPW) spent a full day pruning and trimming trees to foster healthy growth going forward. This Fall, we’ve worked with White Plains Beautification to plant daffodils around numerous trees in the median, which will add color next Spring and for seasons to come.
Separately, the DPW made the decision to install split-rail fencing along Gedney Park Drive in order to deter cars and heavy trucks from parking on the lawn and thus damaging the grass. The new fencing utilizes the same rustic style used in other parks citywide. This is a noticeable change, especially for homeowners fronting the park, but hopefully over time it will enhance the landscape and character of the neighborhood.
