President’s Letter

Dear Neighbors,

As we commence the 250 anniversary of our nation’s founding I am mindful of the role White Plains played in the American Revolution, including the Battle Hill skirmishes and the public reading of the Declaration of Independence in White Plains on July 11, 1776.

John Gedney who purchased his property in 1740 died ten years before the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Interestingly, his heirs included both loyalists and patriots for the American cause.

As you know the Gedney Association celebrated our centennial last year with a great party and memorialized it with our first and long-awaited entrance monument on Gedney Esplanade.

There is little new to report on the Farrell subdivision plan for the former country club property other than to note that Toll Brothers is expected to purchase the property pursuant to the Farrell plan. I should note however that the plan has yet to be approved by the Planning Board. Some of the remaining issues relate to traffic, drainage and a careful review of all building sites.

Lastly, the City’s long-range Capital Plan includes a planned project to improve the traffic and pedestrian signalization at Heatherbloom Road and Mamaroneck Avenue. Unfortunately, it has languished for a number of years. Recently, a child crossing the intersection, on a scooter, was hit by a car. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured. The Board intends to firmly lobby the City government to move this project forward but we need your help. Please write to the Mayor and Common Council to ask that this project be completed as soon as possible.

Gedney Association Letter Re: E-Bike Safety

The Gedney Association recently sent a letter to Mayor Justin Brasch and members of the Common Council regarding public safety concerns related to the increased use of app-based delivery e-bikes in White Plains. In the letter, the Association asked the City to consider additional safety measures, including identification, lighting, reflective vests, and safety training for frequent delivery riders.

CNA Launches New Website

The Council of Neighborhood Associations of White Plains, known as CNA, has launched a newly redesigned website. CNA represents neighborhood associations throughout White Plains, including the Gedney Association, and the new site offers a helpful way to learn more about neighborhoods across the city.

The website includes an interactive neighborhood map, upcoming White Plains events, and a new community postings section for local civic and neighborhood updates. Members may be interested in visiting the site at wp-cna.org.

CNA also recently sent a letter to Mayor Brasch and the Common Council raising concerns about public notice and transparency surrounding the June 29 Special Meeting agenda, which included a number of significant items such as bond ordinances, parking garage repairs, appointments, and a proposed zoning amendment. Members who are interested in local civic issues may wish to read CNA’s letter and follow future updates through the new CNA website.

Bear With Us…Gedney Made the News

In one of the more unexpected neighborhood updates, a black bear was recently spotted moving through the wooded area near Gedney Park Drive. According to the White Plains Police Department, the bear appears to be “passing through,” which is probably the most polite possible way for a bear to visit Gedney.

As amazing as it is to have such a wild neighborhood sighting, residents are reminded to give the bear plenty of space. Please do not approach, feed, follow, or attempt to photograph it up close. Keep pets leashed or indoors if the bear is nearby, and let our unexpected visitor continue on its way safely.

Road Resurfacing Notice

The City of White Plains Department of Public Works will be performing road resurfacing throughout the summer.

Residents in affected areas should receive a notice from DPW with the scheduled date, time, and any parking or access instructions.

Celebrate Our Nation’s 250th Birthday in White Plains

The City of White Plains will celebrate Independence Day with fireworks on July 2 at White Plains High School. Residents are also invited to a special July 12 celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the reading of the Declaration of Independence, featuring a parade and colonial village reenactment.

Free, family-friendly events are planned for both dates.
